The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

CLINICAL SCENARIO 1: The Agitated and disturbed patient

By Professor Ania Korszun and Dr Ali Ajaz

CLINICAL SCENARIO 1: The agitated and disturbed patient

Every individual seen by the psychiatrist presents wide-ranging challenges to deal with during the assessment process. In this first scenario we will work through a case where a disturbed person presents with a high level of agitation.

The videos within these tutorials are constructed scenarios for teaching purposes.  The role of the doctor is performed by a psychiatrist and the role of the patient is performed by a professional actor.

The actor has been briefed on a real case study (modified to maintain anonymity), but the doctor begins the interview with only the information available at the start of the module.

The authors would like to acknowledge Dr Kamaldeep Bhui and Dr Caroline Methuen for their contributions to this scenario. The filming was funded by a grant from Nesta.

You should allow approximately 45 minutes to complete this tutorial.
